A study published in the Journal of Medical Emergencies of the American Heart Association (JAHA) has led to a temporary ban on certain products from the NEXIUM product line.
In this randomized clinical trial, published in the Journal of Medical Emergencies of the American Heart Association, researchers assessed the effectiveness of the product, Nexium 24HR, which is a combination of Nexium 24HR, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and Esomeprazole magnesium, which is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The researchers assessed the effect of the product, Nexium 24HR, on the risk of acute upper gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal cramps, diarrhea, flatulence, upper stomach pain, flatulence, diarrhea, ulcers and vomiting), and cardiovascular events. The study found that the product was associated with an increased incidence of upper gastrointestinal events. The study also found that esomeprazole magnesium, which is an NSAID, was associated with an increased incidence of upper gastrointestinal events.
The study was carried out in an outpatient setting and included patients who had had to undergo hospital admission for GERD within the last three weeks.

Study design
The study was a randomized, double-blind, multi-center, clinical trial. The trial included a total of 731 patients, including 863 patients who were scheduled to be hospitalized for GERD and were given the product in a random order. The participants were assigned to treatment group A, with Nexium 24HR, placebo, and Esomeprazole magnesium. All patients were instructed to take the medication as directed by their doctor. Patients in the treatment group received 40 mg of Nexium 24HR, and the other 14 patients received 20 mg of Nexium 24HR. Patients in the control group received placebo and their symptoms were evaluated at baseline and at follow-up. The patients were randomized to treatment group B, with Nexium 24HR and placebo.
Results
The study showed that the treatment group experienced significantly greater decreases in the number of upper gastrointestinal events as compared to the control group. The study also showed that the treatment group was significantly less likely to have an increase in upper gastrointestinal symptoms as compared to the control group.
Conclusion
In the current study, researchers concluded that the treatment group demonstrated a significantly greater decrease in upper gastrointestinal symptoms as compared to the control group. The results of the study further support the potential of using the product as an adjunct therapy in the treatment of patients with GERD.
